Disability is defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." An individual may also qualify as disabled if he/she has had an impairment in the past or is seen as disabled based on a personal or group standard or norm. Such impairments may include physical, sensory, and cognitive or intellectual impairments. Mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and various types of chronic disease may also be considered qualifying disabilities. A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth. Current issuesCurrent issues and debates surrounding disability include social and political rights, social inclusion and citizenship. In developed countries, the debate has moved beyond a concern about the perceived cost of maintaining dependent people with disabilities to an effort of finding effective ways to ensure that people with disabilities can participate in and contribute to society in all spheres of life. Many are concerned, however, that the greatest need is in developing nations -- where the vast bulk of the estimated 650 million people with disabilities reside. A great deal of work is needed to address concerns ranging from accessibility and education to self-empowerment and self-supporting employment and beyond. In the past few years, disability rights activists have also focused on obtaining full citizenship for the disabled. However obstacles reside in some countries in getting full employment, also public perception of disabled people may vary in areas. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to or not to disclose a disability to a potential employer? Q. My situation is that I was medically discharged from the US Army in 2005. I have several disabilities and have an overall disability rating from the Veterans Administration. I have gone to school to retrain on a rehabilitation plan. I am about to graduate and currently looking for a new full time job. I had a great job offer from a company, and then I told them I have disabilities and they pulled the offer back. The field I am going into is Electronics and Computers. I have talked to many career advisors and they state that I should not tell the company I have them. I feel that I should. On my military discharged it also states that I was medically discharged and have a disability rating as well. I also run into problems when people ask me… [cont.] Asked by army.veteran - Thu Sep 27 12:14:40 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not an advocate of lying during an interview, because the information will usually come out later and then you can be fired for lying on your application. Create a resume and, in it, simply list the dates of service, your job title, and your rank at discharge. If you have to submit a copy of your DD214, do so without comment. If a potential employer asks why you were discharged early, simply tell them you had a service-related medical condition and that you are now cleared to work. If pressed, just explain that the military requires a much higher level of fitness than does a civilian job and that the medical condition will not interfere with your ability to do this job. Don't go into details as to what the medical condition is. … [cont.] Answered by majormomma - Thu Sep 27 12:42:54 2007 Can someone get social security disability even after they start drawing SS benefits? Q. I am planning to get married and both of us recieve social security disability. Will this effect our check and what do I need to do before we do marry? Asked by mollyp - Thu May 29 15:53:57 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I second the comment on checking with your local social security administration. If you are both on disability, then chances are the amounts won't be affected. And to the posters who are criticizing social secuirty receipients as being free loaders, let me educate you. It is very very difficult for an able bodied person to receive SSI benefits, especially if they are young. The criteria is staggering and seriously is nothing less than being blind, an amputee, having a severe siezure disorder, many types of cancers, and broken bodies from severe accidents of some sort, to name just a few. To get SSI benefits requires a severe and permanent disability and sometimes even these people are denied. It can be horribly frustrating.
