Do they allow people to observe support group meetings even if they do not qualify for them?
Q. I'm feeling like I want a little lesson in humanity, and I want to visit a support group for something like AIDS. Would the leaders and members of a support group mind if someone like me (who is not infected) shows up? Would it be any different for a substance abuse group? Also, if anyone else has done this before, would you recommend it?

A. You could ask for permission but I'd think everyone in the group would need to agree to it. If everyone in the group says it's ok, feel free to attend but don't talk, don't distract, don't participate. You should be just like the furniture. But if even one member hesitates or is unsure, don't press it. It'll be quite different from a substance abuse group. I'll be people who have an incureable virus who may die from it but are fighting it, etc. They won't be there to "confess" to their obsessions but to work through the problems of living and loving and trying to carry on with life.
