From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting for another who is not kin and, in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities from the original parent or parents. Unlike guardianship or other systems designed for the care of the young, adoption is intended to effect a permanent change in status and as such requires societal recognition, either through legal or religious sanction. Historically some societies have enacted specific laws governing adoption whereas others have endeavored to achieve adoption through less formal means, notably via contracts that specified inheritance rights and parental responsibilities. Modern systems of adoption, arising in the 20th century, tend to be governed by comprehensive statutes and regulations. Adoption has a long history in the Western world, closely tied with the legacy of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church. Its use has changed considerably over the centuries with its focus shifting from adult adoption and inheritance issues toward children and family creation and its structure moving from a recognition of continuity between the adopted and kin toward allowing relationships of lessened intensity. GNU Free Documentation License How come adoption agencies and attorneys are allowed to profit from adoption? Q. I was talking with my Mom and she made the point that it is illegal to for a organ donor to profit from donating their organ but doctors are allowed to make hundreds of thousands of dollars. She then said that adoption is basically the same way as an organ donation. She said that is the organ donor or natural mother isn't allowed to profit from the procedure than the doctors, adoption agency, and attorneys shouldn't be allowed to profit either. What do you think? With adoption and organ donors nobody should profit because without a donor or natural mother their would be no product. Sorry I am trying to put it in language that will not offend anybody. Q. I have been thinking that it would be great to start an orphanage/adoption agency in a foreign country that has a lot of orphans and kids living on the streets. I was thinking about China. I know that a lot of people adopt children from there. I was just curious about what financial and political steps that I would have to go through to do something like this. Kazi made great points. bottom line is that you have LOTS of homework to do. first step will be to select a country...and then start reading. rules will be different in each country (obviously you'll have to know the law from both U.S. and that country for a start). I would suggest interviewing directors of agencies already working in that country. they can quickly coach you on the cities to stay away from or to focus on areas that still need help. good luck and be patient. there is much to learn and some countries (i.e. Russia) change their adoption policies and rules very often. It is really a personal choice, but based on our experience, we found the following: Private Adoption: Pros - Typically more involvement with the bio family (if that is what you want); typically less of a waiting period; typically less expense involved. Cons - Adoptions occurring in different states (other than where you live) can be more complicated to do this way; many attorneys are not familiar with how to handle special needs adoptions (if the child has special medical needs); lack of counseling available for the bio family, child and/or adoptive family. State Adoption: Pros - the children are already in the system (unfortunately) and available for immediate placement; sibling groups are sometimes available; the expenses are… [cont.] Answered by BPD Wife - Wed Dec 26 20:46:33 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "adoption" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
