In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. In sociology, the concept of community has led to significant debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community. The word "community" is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas (cum, "with/together" + munus, "gift"), a broad term for fellowship or organized society. Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location. GNU Free Documentation License What are some community activities I can do to help me get into college? Q. Ok, I've heard from numerous sources that extra curricular activities and community work are essential in getting into a college. I got extra curricular stuff down, but community work is my problem. I don't know what to do for community activities. All i know is volunteering, but where? Asked by Saad K - Fri Jul 17 20:28:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hopefully you don't have just a list of extra curricular activities, that just bores the admissions people. Make sure that your activities show you actually made a difference. If you were Editor of your school paper, what did you do differently? Did you increase income from advertising, improve editorials, or start a new section? Show why you stand out! For community activities you might consider an internship (paid or unpaid) in a field you are interested in. Maybe working in the local library, an elder care facility, or even starting your own small business. With a lot of cities and counties having to reduce their workforce, you might find opportunities to help out in departments that are short-handed. Fist off I don't have a college education , but as I work in the social services line caring for old peeps in a small rural community I can say that my experiences have shown me how much I have to be grateful for that I have my health and three great kids and there are many others who struggle on in difficult situations. This has led me to do a couple of certificate courses to further my knowledge and make me better at my job.
