What kind of air compressor should I buy for spraying automobiles?
Q. What kind of air compressor should I buy for spraying automobiles? Let me know the hp and how many gallons the compressor should have for use in a place like a body shop. Thanks.

A. you need at least a 5.5 hp compressor. I've painted a car with a pancake compressor. I know you've seen the compressors that stand upright, like they're on a dollie. One of these will be fine, don't go buy some 10hp big ass compressor. Use your money to buy a quility paint gun. Look up bink online. They are reasonable.

How long does a compressor tank last?
Q. I have a compressor that I bought about 4 years ago. Just last year, I pulled the "drain" plug to let out all the moisture that accumulates in the tank. Was surprised when a lot of rusty water came out. 1st question: How often should I drain it? 2nd question: If it is rusting on the inside, how long do these things generally last? Thanks. I guess draining it every two years is bad. :o Am I at risk?

A. The compressor needs to drain after every use. Tanks should last 20 years

Which direction should the compressor fan blow in the bottom of the fridge?
Q. I have a General Electric Top freezer fridge. It stopped working. It seemd that something shorted out at the beginning. I tapped on the compressor fan at the bottom back of the fridge and it started. The question is the fan is sucking air away from the compressor..is this normal, or should it be blowing at the compressor?
Asked by uabscool - Fri Oct 20 23:13:11 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The condenser fan motor turns in a clockwise direction. It can be drawing air from the compressor. It depends on the model of the refrigerator which direction the air flows. If the fan motor was never changed on your refrigerator it is turning in the proper direction as those motors will not change direction. If the fan motor was not turning before you tapped it the motor should be changed because it will definitely stop again. That fan is supposed to create a good flow of air across the condenser coils and compressor. If you are not getting a good air flow the unit will not cool properly. Check the condenser coils for blockage also to ensure proper operation and cut electric consumption.

Q. My system is full of freon and I have a new condensor. The a/c works fine except for when I am idling. The compressor clicks on and off quickly and it stops blowing cold air when I idle. What's going on?? I can imagine I need a new compressor, but is it something I can fix without buying a new one?

How would I go about taping into the compressor? Do I just do a regular tap into it? How will I be sure that all water/condensation will come out of the tap?

How hard is it to replace the AC compressor in a 2001 Dodge Caravan?
Q. I'm an experienced "shadetree mechanic," but I haven't done much work with AC systems. Dealer tells me my Caravan (3.3 liter, dual zone climate control), needs a new compressor, but of course he wants to charge me an arm and a leg. How difficult would it be for me to replace the compressor myself?
Asked by David M - Mon Jun 9 09:30:13 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Its not super hard to get to the compressor itself. If the old compressor blew up there is more to it than just the compressor to replace. You need to replace the accumulator, expansion valve, flush the system as old compressor put debris in the system. Then there are orings to replace, oil to add and evacuate and recharge with the proper amount of freon. The $1000. range is not out of line for this job. The more time you spend now doing this will make sure you don't do it twice ...UJN

Q. They seem similar but different. Normally you buy either an air compressor or a power (water) washer. I want to buy an air compressor, just wondering if it can be easily converted into a power washer.

A. A powerwasher does not use air assit to begin with..it is all hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pump on it...About all you can use on a compressor to make a power washer will be the tires and the frame to mount the motor/pumps etcetera on.. Pressure washer needs no air tank

How much should I expect to pay for a new, installed AC compressor?
Q. The AC compressor on my '95 Ford Explorer has seized up and needs to be replaced. My mechanic gave me a ballpark figure of $1,200 to $1,300 for the job, which includes all parts (incl. 2-year warranty on compressor) and labor. Apparently, you need to replace other things in addition to the compressor when this happens; flush out the lines; etc. Does this price seem reasonable to those of you who are in the know?
Asked by Christopher S - Thu Jun 7 15:40:06 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Possibly. I spent $800.00 for a new compressor, and a switchover to 134A on my wife's Buick two years ago. I recall reading that the system in your truck frequently fills the system with black gunk when the compressor dies, and that frequently, the condensor also must be changed...they referred to it as the "black death"...ask your repair person if he's going to replace the condenser...if not, ask him what sort of warranty he puts on his work...the person who did my Buick guaranteed his work for a year...it's been over two now, with no problems. Good luck!

A. You are better off locating a HVAC company and have them check the unit and quote you on a replacement. Unless you are experienced in HVAC work and have the knowledge and tools dont even try to replace it yourself. Sears, Home Depot etc also sell them but they will hire a HVAC person to do the work and bill you for it.

With that said, the following plusrecipes.com link has a small auto section filled with informative tips and resources to get you closer to answering your question more accurately than I think would be possible on here: Yeah, so I hope the above link is helpful. How can you tell if your AC compressor is bad?
Q. I have a 96 mazda protege. The serpintine belt burnt out and it works in conjuction for the powersteering and AC compressor. Well my powersteering dosent work now and when i tried to put on a new belt the compressor wont move now. Does this mean the compressor is bad?
Asked by ricardo m - Mon Jul 14 02:05:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The a/c compressor normally has a magnetic clutch to engage and disengage it. It should turn freely with the belt off and have virtually no resistance while you spin it.Even with the clutch engaged, you can normaly turn the compressor by hand, it may be hard to turn but it should not be so hard that you cannot turn it even slightly. If it will not move then the compressor clutch has failed and likely the compressor is damaged too. A replacement may be the only solution, along with an A/C service and recharge. If you replace the compressor, you will be able to install the belt and it can be run w/o recharging the a/c, or course you will not have a/c until you have the system recharged.

Should an Air Compressor blow off excess pressure at the crankcase?
Q. I have a used 2 stage air compressor powered by an 5hp electric motor via a drive belt. The compressor is a two stage, it has a V shaped pump with one large and one small cylinder head. The large cylinder head has a small metal line coming from the top of the head, comes down and enters the crankcase via a fitting. The small cylinder head also has a line coming from the top of it's head and comes down and enters the through the side of the crankcase. The fitting that connects this line to the crankcase blows out air when the compressor is on. A friendly know-it-all said it was supposed to be this way to blow off excess pressure, but that doesn't make sense to me. Asked by WoodchuckMagee - Wed Aug 22 18:25:28 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, this compressor is operating correctly. Some compressors operate with automatic stop/start controls, which shut the compressor off when the proper pressure is reached. Other compressors have constant speed controls which uses a pneumatic (air) control line connected to a device which will hold the intake valves open to prevent more air pressure from building up once the desired pressure has been reached. This type of compressor will run in an "idle" mode when it has reached the proper pressure, and it will go back to normal compression mode when the pressure drops. Also, some larger compressors have the ability to bleed off the pressure from the top of the cylinder upon shutting down, so that the compressor motor will not have to… [cont.]

A. I assume you are talking about the quick-disconnect fitting on the end of the hose. No, they are not all the same. This is the most popular fitting, called an "industrial" fitting: This is an "automotive" fitting: I've shown photos of the male fittings. The corresponding female fittings are likewise different. The odds are that your Campbell Hausfeld air compressor has the industrial fitting.

How can I create an adaptor to go from an air compressor nozzle into an inground pool pipe to blow the lines?
Q. We are buying an air compressor tonight to blow the water out of our inground pool lines to winterize it. How can I create a tight seal with the end of the compressor hose with the pipe that needs to be blown out?? Can it be put through a rubber cork, use duct tape to seal it temporarily, or is there an adaptor that you can buy to put into a pipe??
Asked by sonotech02 - Fri Oct 12 10:21:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You don't have to. There is one readily available at pool supply stores (Leslie's should have it if there's one by you), or you can find them online. It is basically a version of the rubber expansion plug with a valve similar to an auto or bike tire inflation valve. There's a picture of one here... They should be available in a few sizes. The most common would be for 1 1/2" pvc.

A. 60 gallon??? Way too big for most things around the house. Somewhere between 2 and 5 is plenty if you are going to use nail guns or automotive tools. One thing I find to be awesome is a "palm nailer" which I use when nailing into tight places, like joist hangers on floor trusses. It's like a leather glove with a metal tube on the palm, you put the nail head first into the tube, and like a pneumatic joy buzzer it effortlessly pounds the nail into the hole of the joist hanger. It will nail it anywhere but that's where I find it most useful.

Will my Bostitch compressor work for a framing nail gun?
Q. I have a Bostitch 6-Gallon 2.0 HP (Peak) Oil-Free Compressor , which delivers 2.8 CFM at 90 PSI with a maximum operating pressure of 150 PSI. It has an oil-free pump for less maintenance than traditional models, Its current draw is 12 Amps Will it work with a Bostitch framing nail gun? Will it work with any other brands of framing nail gun?
Asked by Charlie C - Mon Jun 7 09:27:40 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A nail gun usually takes 90 PSI of air so don't crank up the air compressor to 150 or you'll end up blowing out the o-ring seals in the nail gun! What you need to do is see what the cfm usage is for the nail gun that you are wishing to use on this air compressor. Then you will know if your compressor can keep up with the nail gun.
