Family (from Latin familÄa), denotes a group of people or animals (many species form the equivalent of a human family wherein the adults care for the young) affiliated by a consanguinity, affinity or co-residence. Although the concept of consanguinity originally referred to relations by "blood," anthropologists have argued that one must understand the idea of "blood" metaphorically, and that many societies understand 'family' through other concepts rather than through genetic distance.

One of the primary functions of the family is to produce and reproduce persons, biologically and socially. Thus, one's experience of one's family shifts over time. From the perspective of children, the family is a family of orientation: the family serves to locate children socially, and plays a major role in their enculturation and socialization. From the point of view of the parent(s), the family is a family of procreation the goal of which is to produce and enculturate and socialize children. However, producing children is not the only function of the family; in societies with a sexual division of labor, marriage, and the resulting relationship between two people, is necessary for the formation of an economically productive household.

A conjugal family includes only the husband, the wife, and unmarried children who are not of age. The most common form of this family is regularly referred to as a nuclear family.

A consanguineal family consists of a parent and his or her children, and other people.

A matrifocal family consists of a mother and her children. Generally, these children are her biological offspring, although adoption of children is a practice in nearly every society. This kind of family is common where women have the resources to rear their children by themselves, or where men are more mobile than women.

How can I reach out to families in need and make a difference by helping people affected by cancer?
Q. Less than a week ago, a close family friend passed away from cancer. She has three daughters, all still in school. I myself am only a junior in high school, but want to find a way to reach out to family's who are affected by family members with health issues without invading the privacy of these families. Any ideas how I can make a difference?

Do blended families involving step parents and children work out?
Q. I've been part of a blended family since the age of 4. It didn't work out. The two families were extremely different, and my brother and I never truly 'fitted in' with our dad, his wife, and her 4 kids (who were older than us). I rarely hear of success stories about blended families - do you have one to share? It would be nice to hear a success story, but please answer even if it didn't work out.

A. I like the 'ex-etiquette' newspaper column. It's written by the ex- and current wife of the same man, and they've got lots of advice on making blended families work. I think it can work if all the adults involved (=old and new spouses) want to make it work and are willing to put aside jealousies and old resentments. Sadly, that seems to be rare.

How can I donate to starving families in third world countries?
Q. I want to donate food or money, but I don't know where to donate it to. I've been told that there is corruption in these places and it may not even directly reach these starving families, which really upsets me. I want to help in any way I can - what can I do? Yeah, but the thing is people in our community can get support from the government and other organizations..whereas people living in third world countries often can't..so you see this is why I want to donate to them and I don't live in USA I live in Canada.
