Loss
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, searchLoss may refer to:
- A negative difference between retail price In all modern economies, the overwhelming majority of prices are quoted in units of some form of currency. Although in theory, prices could be quoted as quantities of other goods or services this sort of barter exchange is rarely seen and cost In business, retail, and accounting, a cost is the value of money that has been used up to produce something, and hence is not available for use anymore. In economics, a cost is an alternative that is given up as a result of a decision. In business, the cost may be one of acquisition, in which case the amount of money expended to acquire it is of production
- An event in which the team or individual in question did not win.
- Loss (baseball) In baseball, the win–loss record is the number of wins and losses a pitcher has accumulated either in his career or a single season, a pitching statistic in baseball
- Attenuation In physics, attenuation is the gradual loss in intensity of any kind of flux through a medium. For instance, sunlight is attenuated by dark glasses, X-rays are attenuated by lead, and light and sound are attenuated while passing through seawater, a reduction in amplitude and intensity of a signal
- In telecommunications, loss is a decrease in signal in a communications system:
- Angular misalignment loss In waveguide design and construction, angular misalignment loss is power loss caused by the deviation from optimum angular alignment of the axes of source-to-waveguide, waveguide-to-waveguide, or waveguide-to-detector. The waveguide may be dielectric or metallic. Angular misalignment loss does not include lateral offset loss and longitudinal, power loss caused by the deviation from optimum angular alignment
- Bridging loss Bridging loss is the loss, at a given frequency, that results when an impedance is connected across a transmission line. It is expressed as the ratio, in decibels, of the signal power delivered to a given point in a system downstream from the bridging point prior to bridging, to the signal power delivered to the given point after bridging, the loss that results when an impedance is connected across a transmission line
- Coupling loss Coupling loss also known as connection loss is the loss that occurs when energy is transferred from one circuit, circuit element, or medium to another. Coupling loss is usually expressed in the same units—such as watts or decibels—as in the originating circuit element or medium, the loss that occurs when energy is transferred from one circuit, optical device, or medium to another
- Insertion loss In telecommunications, insertion loss is the loss of signal power resulting from the insertion of a device in a transmission line or optical fiber. As it is usually expressed as a ratio in dB relative to the transmitted signal power, it can also be referred to as attenuation, the decrease in transmitted signal power resulting from the insertion of a device in a transmission line or optical fiber
- Path loss Path loss is the reduction in power density (attenuation) of an electromagnetic wave as it propagates through space. Path loss is a major component in the analysis and design of the link budget of a telecommunication system, the attenuation undergone by an electromagnetic wave in transit from a transmitter to a receiver
- Free-space path loss In telecommunication, free-space path loss is the loss in signal strength of an electromagnetic wave that would result from a line-of-sight path through free space, with no obstacles nearby to cause reflection or diffraction. It does not include factors such as the gain of the antennas used at the transmitter and receiver, nor any loss associated, the loss in signal strength that would result if all influences were sufficiently removed having no effect on its propagation
- Return loss In telecommunications, return loss or reflection loss is the loss of signal power resulting from the reflection caused at a discontinuity in a transmission line or optical fiber. This discontinuity can be a mismatch with the terminating load or with a device inserted in the line. It is usually expressed as a ratio in decibels ;, the ratio of the amplitude of the reflected wave to the amplitude of the incident wave
- Round-trip loss Round-trip gain refers to the laser physics, and laser cavitys . It is gain, integrated along a ray, which makes a round-trip in the cavity in laser physics refers to energy lost due to scattering or absorption
- Loss function In statistics, decision theory and economics, a loss function is a function that maps an event onto a real number representing the economic cost or regret associated with the event, in statistics, a function representing the cost associated with an event
